Today is my 23rd birthday
That’s right, on the 3rd of the 3rd, in my 3rd year of college, I’m turning 23. Now if that ain’t a coinkydink I don’t know what is. And in commemoration of this magical mathematical happening that is God creating and gracing the world with my presence, I have compiled a list of 23 things I know to be true at 23.
Don’t just accept the things you cannot change.
Change the things you cannot accept
Your body isn’t going to look the same before you go to sleep at night as when you wake up in the morning
Your not 18 anymore, treat your body with the respect it deserves
You’re older relatives won’t be around forever
Cherish every moment possible with them.
Talk to them; listen to their stories; soak it all in. You never know which moment will be your last with them
Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right
The power of the mind is powerful force indeed
Shopping at Kmart is nothing to be ashamed of
Don’t waste time on toxic friendships
You become the people you spend the most time with, so choose wisely
Finishing an entire season of your favorite show in a day doesn’t quite feel like the accomplishment it used to
Coffee is not breakfast
It really doesn’t last long, trust me
There is a price to independence
You’re all grown up now, you can be taken seriously. But is it all it’s cracked to be?
Not all those who wander are lost
Not every trend is for every body, and that’s okay
Time and distance really can alter, affect and even end relationships
Some things fade out naturally, because they should.
Some of the friendships you shared were meant to last a season, not a lifetime, and that’s okay.
Having coffee with someone can actually just mean having coffee with someone
Dry shampoo will change your life forever
You are never too old or too young to achieve your goals
Never let anyone think less of you because of your age, you are more than qualified and capable
Follow your instincts, they’re there for a reason
It’s where true wisdom manifests
Recognition and appreciation are not the same thing
Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard
Five year plans are a joke
Have ambition and direction but don’t worry yourself with rigid planning.
You’re young, this is the time to make mistakes and take big risks, your future will be knocking on your door step soon enough
Never accept second hand advice
Although, this is second hand advice
Facebook is outdated and overrated
Mother really does know best
at least, she knew better than your younger self ever did. So apologize
Work to your strengths and stop comparing yourself
You are you, use what you have; you already have everything you need to succeed, a unique set of skills, talents and strengths
I woke up this morning and realised that, while turning another year older is always an exciting time, it makes you reflect and evaluate. And I have come to realise that, I am in no way where I thought I would be at this stage in life. I thought I would be engaged or at least in a committed relationship; be living in New York or would at least have traveled there; be in my dream job, living life to the full. But I’m not.
And you know what Difference Makers, it’s okay. I might not be living the life that Samii of few years back thought she’d be living by 23, but the life I do have is pretty swell.
Thank you for the birthday wishes my friends, let’s see where 23 takes me.
